Dr. William Moen Appointed TxCDK Director

Dr. Herman L. Totten, Dean, School of Library and Information Sciences, announced the appointment of Dr. William E. Moen, Associate Professor, to a dual appointment as Director of the Texas Center for Digital Knowledge TxCDK and Director of Research in the School of Library and Information Sciences. This appointment is effective September 1, 2007.

Dr. Moen has extensive experience with TxCDK, having served as its Interim Director since 2004. During this time, TxCDK has successfully brought together faculty and students from across the University to promote and support research and academic programming. As Director, Dr. Moen is charged with helping to fulfill Dr. Totten's administrative goal to make TxCDK self-sustaining as an internationally recognized research, development and consulting service for interdisciplinary projects.

Interdisciplinary Information Science Ph.D. Program Student Travel Funds Program 2005-2006

The Texas Center for Digital Knowledge (TxCDK) will accept requests from students in the Interdisciplinary Information Science Ph.D. Program for travel funds to support participation in conferences and meetings. The School of Library and Information Sciences is providing these funds to assist in the scholarly and professional development of Ph.D. students.

Awards for up to $300 are available for Spring/Summer 2006. Approximately five to eight awards will be made on January 6, 2006. Funds will be available until depleted.

Figa and Chung Paper Accepted for the International Virtual Storytelling Conference 2005

Eunkyung Chung, TxCDK Research Assistant, and Dr. Elizabeth Figa, TxCDK Fellow have a paper accepted for the International Virtual Storytelling Conference 2005 that will be held in Strasbourg (France) on November, 30 - December 2, 2005. http://www.virtualstorytelling.com/VS2005/index.html This is an extremely competitive international conference and the paper is expected to be published in the prestigious Lecture Notes in Computer Science by Springer.

TxCDK Research Assistantships for 2005-2006

Award Guidelines and Procedures

TxCDK is able to make available to TxCDK Fellows three research assistantships (RAs), to be filled by Interdisciplinary Information Science Ph.D. students. These are 12-month RAs. TxCDK Fellows can submit a request (described below) for one or more of the RAs. RAs will be awarded to TxCDK Fellows on a competitive basis.

The School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS) is providing funding for these RAs. Each of the Ph.D. students who have been selected to receive these TxCDK RAs will have financial support in the form of:

$5,000 Scholarship from UNT Graduate School
$5,000 Scholarship from SLIS
Research Assistantship (approximately $12.00/hour plus benefits) from SLIS.

Guidelines and Procedures

TxCDK Fellows should review the students' information, and then submit a request for one or more of these TxCDK RAs. Your request should be accompanied by a plan of no more than one page that includes:

Name(s) of specific student you would like to work with
Description of the research, grant proposal, or teaching assignment the RA will work on with you
Role of the research assistant
Your plan for securing additional support and funding for the student after this 12-month RA is completed.

The Dean of SLIS and Interim Director of TxCDK will review the requests (with the assistance of the TxCDK Executive Committee as needed). Preference will be given to requests that include involvement of student in research activities, the likelihood of future funding to support the student, and a willingness to contribute a percentage of recovered indirect costs on current or future grants to TxCDK.

IMLS Grant Award to TxCDK Fellows Turner and Werchan

University of North Texas, School of Library and Information Sciences - Denton, TX - $159,578

The University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences, in collaboration with the Ysleta Independent School District and the El Paso Independent School District, will create, test, and revise Web-based courseware to be used by school librarians throughout the nation in online continuing education for K-12 librarians and staff. This project will result in Web-based courseware on five continuing education topics chosen through a needs assessment process within a large and diverse public school system. It will be evaluated and revised based on outcomes assessments from a large user base. The school districts will have a royalty-free license to offer the courseware to their librarians and library staff. - By Marsh, Corrie

RFID Institute October 25-26 2005

The Texas Center for Digital Knowledge will be co-sponsoring an RFID Institute with the National Information Standards Organization.The Institute will be held at theUniversity of North Texas (Denton, Texas) on October 25-26. 2005.

The RFID Institute will examine current issues in ROI, global RFID, interoperability standards, as well as implementations in industry, manufacturing, distribution, and information centers/libraries.The large number of suppliers and RFID solutions companies in the DFW area are contributing to this program. Participants will also include NISO members from information centers, information technology, publishers, libraries, and booksellers.
